Evidence in 30 Minutes

Learning goal: Trace a claim to a source and distinguish evidence from interpretation.

Facilitator sequence

  1. 0–5 min · Each learner writes one claim from a short public explainer.
  2. 5–12 min · Follow its source link and record author, date, method and scope.
  3. 12–20 min · In pairs, mark observation, interpretation and uncertainty.
  4. 20–27 min · Rewrite the claim so it matches the evidence.
  5. 27–30 min · Exit check: name one question that remains open.

Participant worksheet

  1. Claim in my own words:
  2. Original source and date:
  3. What was observed or measured?
  4. What is interpretation?
  5. What limit matters?

Self-check: Can the learner state one supported observation, one interpretation and one limitation?

Closure: Each participant records one source to revisit and one question that remains open.

Read a Chart Carefully

Learning goal: Describe a chart before explaining it.

Facilitator sequence

  1. 0–5 min · Identify the chart question and source.
  2. 5–12 min · Read axes, units, dates and population.
  3. 12–22 min · Describe pattern, spread and any missing context.
  4. 22–30 min · Write one cautious interpretation and one alternative.
  5. 30–35 min · Peer check: did the explanation exceed the picture?

Participant worksheet

  1. Title and source:
  2. What is one observation?
  3. What is not shown?
  4. What alternative explanation could fit?

Self-check: Can the learner state one supported observation, one interpretation and one limitation?

Closure: Each participant records one source to revisit and one question that remains open.

Map a System

Learning goal: Make a simple system boundary and feedback hypothesis visible.

Facilitator sequence

  1. 0–5 min · Choose a familiar non-sensitive situation.
  2. 5–12 min · Define place, time horizon and outcome.
  3. 12–22 min · List actors, resources, stocks and flows.
  4. 22–32 min · Draw three links and mark evidence needed.
  5. 32–40 min · Identify one delay, an excluded perspective and a monitoring signal.

Participant worksheet

  1. Boundary:
  2. Actors and relationships:
  3. One possible feedback loop:
  4. Evidence needed:
  5. Who or what is outside the boundary?

Self-check: Can the learner state one supported observation, one interpretation and one limitation?

Closure: Each participant records one source to revisit and one question that remains open.

Check an AI Output

Learning goal: Practice verifying an AI-generated answer without assuming it is correct.

Facilitator sequence

  1. 0–5 min · Use a fictional or non-sensitive sample.
  2. 5–12 min · Break the answer into factual claims, numbers, citations and judgments.
  3. 12–22 min · Verify one claim through an independent primary source.
  4. 22–30 min · Check arithmetic and citation existence separately.
  5. 30–35 min · Annotate what remains uncertain and what should not be used.

Participant worksheet

  1. Claim to verify:
  2. Best original source:
  3. Calculation checked?
  4. Citation exists and supports claim?
  5. Decision and limit:

Self-check: Can the learner state one supported observation, one interpretation and one limitation?

Closure: Each participant records one source to revisit and one question that remains open.
